The pediatric dentist will complete a visual examination of the teeth, assess for decay (cavities) and give guidance to parents in regards to their findings, as well as guidance regarding children's dental development and what to expect as the child grows.
Depending on the age and cooperation of the child, X-rays may be taken of the teeth to help assess for cavities that may form in between the teeth that cannot be seen visually in the mouth, or the dentist may request a Panoramic X-ray - which shows all the teeth, including the developing adult teeth, to assess for orthodontic concerns.
A cleaning and fluoride application may be done at the initial visit as well.
